Merle was carrying a tray of drinks out, when he looked up, and saw it.
<font size=+5>"NUUULLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"</FONT>
As the tray of drinks fell crashing to the floor, Merle ran screaming from the room, and no amount of threatening, screaming or cajoling by Barkeep could coax him out from under his cot.
-
Merle crawled out from under his cot long enough to draw a new pitcher of Sam Adams for Nommy, and furtively crept over to the table. "Here, happy belated birthday. Now I gotta go hide from the Null!"
Quaking with terror, Merle scrambled back under his cot, taking his blanky with him.....
-
Thanks MErle.
Nomad gets obliterated by himself in the corner.
-
Noting Merle's reaction to the Null, PC quickly hid under the table with him.
"pssst Merle, what is it and why are we scared of it?"
-
"I dunno what it is. They used to show up all the time at this other place, though. Always meant trouble."
Merle made a mental note to switch Crash's drinks to O'Doule's. Hey, if she couldn't tell the difference between a cot and a table, it was time to cut her off!
-
Baze looked blankly at the Null. "What's so scary about that?"
But there were more important things to worry about than Merle's irrational fears. "Barkeep! Hey! Do you reckon we could get a big screen in here? A girl's gotta watch the World Cup somewhere, you know!"
The Barkeep shrugged. "Don't know if we can pick up the BBC this far out."
"Let's find out, shall we?" So saying, Baze climbed to her feet and strode out of the door. She returned a few minutes later with a folding screen which she proceeded to set up in a corner. Pulling a small projector from an inside pocket, she set it up in the middle of the empty glasses on the table. "Now if I can just find the right setting..."
-
Crawling out from under the cot "it looked like a table in the post grading haze" PC saw Baze setting up a tv. "You know, ESPN and ESPN2 are carrying all of the games. We don't need the BBC."
Picking up the remote, PC turns on ESPN. "So what are the US squads chances of winning this thing?"
-
Merle crawled out from under the cot, his fears relieved by Baze's bravado in front of the Null.
"Hey, a round for everyone from Barkeep to celebrate the US win over Portugal!" Barkeep scowled at Merle, but nodded. Merle quickly poured the drinks and mugs and distributed them at the table.
-
Yo Merley, give me one-a doze. Sheesh, whadda month. I've been working harder'n a one legged man in an aa....aaah that tasted good!
-
Base settled back in her chair, finding a place for her feet on the crowded table. Ah... football. In a bar. With beer. Heaven.
"The US did pretty good in that win over Portugal!" she conceded, "even *with* that fantastic own-goal."
She looked thoughtful for a second. "Actually- you probably have more of a chance of winning it than the English team do. Oh! Hold on, it's the Argentina game!"
And sure enough, it came up on the screen. From somewhere beneath her voluminous jacket, Baze pulled out an England scarf, and draped in round her neck. "Come on England!"
-
England 1 Argentina 0
That's my kind of day at work
-
Ahh the World Cup. Life is good. The US beat Portugal. England beat Argentina. France lost. Very nice.
Here is a link to some great articles being written about the World Cup. They have made me laugh. (grins)
"Merle, what is up with this O'Douls? England won. Give me a Guinness! Please. "
-
Huzzah! Congrats, Ian. Crash, I should've called you during soccer to see what sort of exclamations I'd get over the phone and do a compare and contrast to hockey
Barkeep! A round of Guinness!
-
"Yes!" Baze surged out of the chair and danced around the room. "Take that, Argentina!" She suddenly realised that she looked a mite foolish dancing round like a loon, and sat down quickly. "Barkeep, that's a round for everyone if you please! No, make that two rounds! This is a celebration!"
-
LOL Ery. One problem, soccer is on at 2:30, 4:30, and 7:30 am out here. I am not watching too many of the games. (grins) I need my beauty sleep.
Now you could have called in the middle of the third period of the Red Wings game the other night. You sould have gotten an earful when Lindtrom and then Draper scored those two golas with in thirteen seconds of each other.
-
Well geez, what about LAST night's game? Triple overtime? Mark about had kittens before the Red Wings FINALLY scored the winning goal and I was beat. Good thing they're not playing tonight or both teams'd be dragging. Should be a pretty interesting final, the 'Canes are giving the 'Wings a run for the cup.
-
Baze looked up briefly from the TV. "What is this 'hockey' that you speak of? Used to play hockey at school- didn't think it was all that popular!"
She turned back to the screen. "Here we go, chaps, USA versus South Korea. I'll give you 3 to 1 that the US wins. Any takers?" She tucked her England scarf back into her jacket and produced a USA banner. Hanging it round her neck, she turned back to the game. "Come on you whites!"
-
Tell me about it. Here is is 1:30 am and I am still waiting to see if the Red Wings will win. Sheeesh.
But they did, and that is all that matters. (grins)
Team USA needs a tie to advance to the second round. Since Poland has lost both its games, I think it is more then possible. Soth Korea could be in some trouble. Portugal is not going to be an easy team to beat or tie and they are going to be playing all out.
-
Nomad slurs loudly foroim the corner table. Everybody forget he was even there.
GO U.SSSHHHH.A!!!!!
-
Bad luck guys, your keeper played very well though.
Baze - for some reason the Americans make hockey even harder by playing on ice. Silly idea really.

On ice? What do they go and do a silly thing like that for? Especially when there's perfectly good grass all the year round?
The Poland Portugal game was pretty spectacular! 4-0! That's exactly how good the USA defence are. Fantastic! Bad luck for not winning the South Korea game, but a draw's still good, especially in the atmosphere in that stadium. Does South Korea have a reason to hate you guys, or what?
-
Merle perked up at Baze's comments. "Seems the SKs have a short memory. 'Thout us, there'd just be 'Korea' to talk about. Anyway, they're still miffed cause their short track skater got DQd for trying to knock down on of ours, so ours won the gold." Merle shrugged.
"Anyway, too bad about the Frogs. But they reallys shouldn't have let all the teams they played wear those German uniforms. France couldn't play too well with their hands in the air, could they?"
-
Baze nodded sagely.
"It really is a flaw in the French gameplan. Perhaps they would play better with blindfolds on?"
-
Wizzard nods in agreement
And the U.S.? Win, tie, and lose, in that order. Then they go to the second round.
Life is good.
-
Qualification was pretty close those eh?
Who'd a thought Japan and Korea would win their groups? Wish I'd had a bet on that...
-
That Portugal South Korea game was fantastic! So close! SK and Japan totally deserve to go through- everyone beforehand was wondering whether they'd be able to put on a show at all, and they both won their groups. Good on them!
Just heard this:
What's the most expensive ticket on the Japanese black market?
The next flight from Tokyo to Charles de Gaulle.
Sorry. Couldn't resist.
-
-
Baze focuses with difficulty on Nommy. Celebratory drinking had, perhaps, gone a little far.
"Red Sox? Is that baseball?"
-
Yup! The Boston Red Sox Major League Baseball.
They are in 1st place!!!
-
Cool! First place in what? World Series? League? In any case,
"Go Red Sox!"
-
Top of the East Division of the American League by the look of it. Certainly must be doing better than when I last watched them play
The US beat Spain this morning! Way to go!
-
Baze, what's most significant about the Red Sox being in first place is that the "Damn Yankees" aren't. I'm not a baseball fan at all, but this is something along the lines of basic American baseball, so I thought I'd pass that little tidbit on.
Ian...Spain? I thought they just beat Ireland after 2 OT's and penalty kicks. USA beat Mexico, though. True, both Mexico and Spain speak Spanish, but trust me, the differences are more than what we experience as American English vs. the Queens' English.
DAMHIKT.
-
Ooops! I knew I had something wrong there when I posted. I'll just blame the effect of an early Monday morning
-
Go U.S.A
Go Red Sox!
Go Patriots!
Nomad buys PC her guinnes and tells Merle to keep em coming!
Cheers Prof!
-
Go USA. We can soooo beat Germany. WOuldn't that be sweet, USA versus South Korea in the Semi-finals? (grins)
And Detroit won the Stanley Cup (sorry I am a bit behind but I have been grading AP exams for a week)
Life is very, very good.
PC looks for Merle "Merle another Guinness please!"
-
Your guys could definitely beat Germany! I'll be cheering you all the way! And hasn't your El Presidente actually acknowledge that there's a USA team in the World Cup? Fantastic!
Hey Merle! How about a guiness here too? My mother told me never to mix my drinks, but what does she know?
-
Now why would an Italian club suddenly fire their Korean player? I wonder...just 'cos he scored against Italy?
What a bunch of *********!!!
If (woohoo!) USA beat Germany, they then face Spain or Korea. Maybe my USA beat Spain statement was prescience? We can hope

Raises a glass to the valient effort of the English and American futbol squads
It was a fun run. I enjoyed reading about the games, I never did catch one in its entirty. Watch out world, the US is coming in 2006!!!!
Merle, a round of Guinness for everyone!!
-
Baze tried a smile from her slumped position.
"Yah. Respect all round. 2006 should be good!" She raised her pint of guinness. "And here's to South Korea winning!"
-
